Karyn Bradley, managing partner of Gowling WLG's Toronto office, appeared on CBC Radio's Metro Morning today and issued a challenge to other law firms in the area to donate to Sounds of the Season, CBC's annual charity drive in support of food banks across the GTA.
"The principles of Sounds of the Season - giving, taking care of each other, building a strong community - are principles that everyone can get behind," said Bradley. "There are hundreds of law firms across the GTA, and the legal profession is known for being very generous and giving. And we, as lawyers, are known for being a bit competitive, so our hope is that by issuing this challenge to our fellow firms, we can all work together to make a real difference."
The challenge initially began as a friendly wager between Gowling WLG's offices in Toronto and Montreal over whose MLS soccer team - Toronto FC or the Montreal Impact - would advance to the MLS championship - with the losing office agreeing to donate $500 to the winning office's charity of choice.
In light of TFC's dramatic win in the Eastern Conference final on Nov. 30, the Montreal office made a donation to the Toronto office's charity of choice: CBC's Sounds of the Season. The Toronto office then matched that amount to make it an even $1,000 donation from the firm.
On Metro Morning, Bradley recounted the story and announced that Gowling WLG would be increasing its donation to $2,500 - and challenged other law firms throughout Toronto and the GTA to do the same.
At the end of the interview, host Matt Galloway further threw down the gauntlet: "Other law firms that are out there: you've heard what Karyn has said. [Gowling WLG has] given $2,500…what are you going to do to help build [this] city?...You can take up her challenge by donating to Sounds of the Season."
In addition to Sounds of the Season, Gowling WLG is a supporter of many charitable causes, during the holiday season and throughout the year, including the United Way, Canadian Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Global Medic and Indspire, among others.
