Gowling WLG launches Canada North practice group

January 11, 2018

Gowling WLG is pleased to announce the launch of Canada North, a practice group of lawyers who are dedicated to serving clients in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and the northern regions of many provinces.

Encompassing a breadth of legal areas — including corporate commercial, environmental, mining, Indigenous, procurement and energy law, as well as litigation and dispute resolution — the practice builds on the firm’s decades of experience working in Canada’s North and longstanding commitment to its people.

“From the daily struggles of conducting business in remote regions to navigating complex regulatory regimes unlike any others in Canada, those hoping to succeed in Canada’s North require legal counsel with on-the-ground capabilities and sophisticated technical, cultural and socio-political expertise,” said Adam Chamberlain, a Toronto-based Gowling WLG partner and Canada North team member.

“By forming Canada North, we’re harnessing resources and talent from across the firm’s established practices to deliver tailored, informed solutions to clients across a broad range of sectors,” added Calgary partner and team member Richard Grant.

Working with local and territorial governments, Indigenous groups, institutions, and industrial and commercial enterprises, the Canada North team will help clients benefit from the unique business opportunities available in Canada’s northern regions. The team is equipped to assist organizations already based in the North, as well as those based elsewhere who wish to enter the market or make further inroads there.

Starting this winter, the Canada North team will present a series of client seminars and webinars on a variety of northern-related topics. The first webinar will discuss recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions concerning Indigenous rights and their likely impacts on Canada’s North. Presenters will include Max Faille and Guy Régimbald, members of Canada North who appeared before the Supreme Court on some of those cases, as well as Brian Crane, who has represented Indigenous interests in the North for decades.
