12 January 2015

Gowlings is delighted to announce that Avril Cole, a highly regarded mining and corporate finance lawyer, has joined its Toronto office as a partner and member of its firm-wide Corporate Finance and M&A Group.

Cole brings an established corporate law practice with an extensive network of mining industry contacts that span the globe, with a particular focus on Africa. An experienced negotiator with governments and regulatory authorities, Cole frequently handles country risk assessments and due-diligence assignments. Prior to joining Gowlings, Cole practised corporate law at another large Canadian law firm.

“We are delighted to welcome Avril to our Toronto office,” said Scott Jolliffe Gowlings chair and CEO. “Her unique skill set and extensive relationships internationally, particularly in Africa, make her an invaluable adviser to any client considering developing or financing a mining project.”

Cole specializes in advising Canadian and international clients on mergers and acquisitions, and commercial transactions within the resource sector. She has worked on projects throughout North and South America, the U.K., and Africa, and has particular expertise in mining asset acquisitions and divestments, licensing and title matters, and commercial mining agreements.

Called to both the Ontario and New York state bars, Cole is a graduate from the Wolverhampton University law school. She is heavily involved in the mining community, and is a member of Women in Mining and Women in Capital Markets.
