George Sevier

George Sevier is a principal associate with almost a decade of IP law experience and is recognised by the World Intellectual Property Review as a leading IP practitioner. He knows first-hand the challenges faced by clients, having spent more than two years in-house on secondment with Unilever UK, Coca-Cola, Ordnance Survey and AstraZeneca.

He deals with all aspects of intellectual property enforcement and exploitation, from brand licensing and advertising law advice, to multi-jurisdictional IP litigation. He has particular expertise in dealing with online infringement, from stopping the use of trade marks in keyword advertising, to recovering domain names, having infringing products removed from online stores, and getting entire websites removed from the internet.

He is a digital copyright specialist, and is a regular writer on the subject of tackling music, film and broadcast piracy in the EU.

George is based in London, but his work is frequently cross-border, including the management of IP enforcement actions for Dyson in more than 40 jurisdictions across the globe. George has a number of US-based clients, and visits the US several times a year.

George acts for numerous household brand owners such as A.S. Watson, AstraZeneca, Baker Tilly, Carlsberg, G-Star RAW, Mothercare, Premier Foods, United Biscuits and Unilever. His work spans sectors such as biotech, energy, food and drink, fast-moving consumer goods, financial services, high tech consumer goods and retail.

George is Chair of IPSoc, the society for junior IP practitioners.

Experience

  • Recovering numerous domain names incorporating clients' trade marks, which have been used for cybersquatting, fraud or unfair competition, through taking action under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and Nominet policies, or in the courts.
  • Co-ordinating the enforcement of Dyson's bladeless fan IP across the globe, including managing work carried out by lawyers as far spread as Brazil, Japan, South Africa and the USA. The work has protected the market for Dyson's Air Multiplier bladeless fans, by putting a stop to more than 1,000 retailers and distributors of infringing fans.
  • Advising clients on brand clearance, helping to avoid the expensive mistake of launching new brands which a third party might be able to stop.
  • Negotiating trade mark licences, merchandising agreements and sponsorship agreements for clients including Beiersdorf, Marks and Spencer and Unilever.
  • Acting for Stüder Professional Audio GmbH in relation to the UK aspects of US and UK patent litigation against Calrec Audio Limited relating to the design and functionality of Calrec's audio mixing consoles.
  • Acting in patent infringement and revocation actions for Dyson concerning dust separation, vacuum cleaner movement and bladeless fan technology.
  • Acting for Unilever in disputes concerning the parallel importation of its products from outside of Europe. George spent seven months on secondment with Unilever UK acting as its brand protection counsel, taking action against retailers and importers of grey and counterfeit goods.
