Gowlings is delighted to announce that Ahab Abdel-Aziz, a partner and global director of nuclear power generation at the firm, has been named president of the Canadian Nuclear Law Organization (CNLO). Magdalena Hanebach, an associate in Gowlings' Nuclear Group, has also been appointed treasurer of the organization.

Abdel-Aziz has a long-standing history with the CNLO and, along with Gowlings counsel David McFadden, is one of the founding members of its board of directors.

In his role as president, Abdel-Aziz will focus on promoting educational initiatives, increasing collaboration between Canadian and international professionals with nuclear law expertise, and furthering the exchange of information.

The CNLO is part of the International Nuclear Law Association (INLA), a global network of nuclear energy lawyers that has been advancing co-operation between members around the world for over 40 years. Abdel-Aziz is a member of the INLA's Regulatory Affairs Working Group and, as president of the CNLO, will appear as Canada's representative on the INLA's management board.

With over 20 years of experience in the global nuclear sector, Abdel-Aziz has advised leading members of the Canadian and international nuclear energy industry and government agencies in policy and legislative development, nuclear project development and finance, licensing and compliance, and dispute resolution. He also advises clients in the petroleum and petrochemicals, mining and forestry, and manufacturing sectors on regulatory approvals, environmental assessment and risk management.

An accomplished litigator, Ahab has represented clients in technically complex civil and regulatory disputes, including recent multi-billion dollar nuclear project arbitration. He is recognized as one of Canada's top energy lawyers by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, Report on Business/Lexpert Special Edition: Canada's Leading Energy Lawyers and Who's Who Legal: Canada.

The Gowlings Nuclear Group is at the forefront of the nuclear industry's revitalization - in Canada and around the world.
