David C. Bishop

David Bishop is a partner at Gowling WLG and head of Calgary's Advocacy Group. David's practice involves all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation with an emphasis on directors' and officers' defence, product liability, professional liability disputes, shareholder disputes, class actions, large property and industrial claims, and environmental litigation. He is familiar with all aspects of dispute resolution, including private mediations, judicial dispute resolution conferences and arbitrations.

David has acted on matters in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He has appeared in the courts at all levels, including the Alberta and Manitoba Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. David has also participated in NAFTA Bi-National Canada/US and Canada/Mexico free trade dispute resolution hearings.

He has extensive experience acting for large corporations in the energy sector including disputes arising from valuation of shares in public and private companies, product liability matters, commercial contract claims and dissenting shareholder proceedings. He regularly acts for directors, officers and companies in a class action, derivative action, shareholder and regulatory (Alberta Securities Commission) context. He has acted on large multi-party product liability cases in various industries, including energy, steel, biotechnology, medical and consumer products.

David also frequently acts for architects, engineers, surveyors, accountants, brokers, veterinarians, lawyers and many other professionals. Most recently, David has acted for the company and the directors and officers of two large entities in the energy space in relation to restatement class actions advanced in the US and Canada.

David represents insurers across Canada in relation to directors and officers, professional liability, property, class actions, subrogation, and tort claims. Most recently, David acted as coverage counsel for an international insurer on a series of multi-jurisdictional claims arising from a large North American pipeline project.

David has extensive experience in prosecuting and defending shareholder claims including oppression, derivative action, "shot gun" disputes, and is experienced in all manner of shareholder and company valuation issues.

David was named "Litigator of the Year" for Alberta and "Insurance Litigator of the Year" for Canada by Benchmark in 2015.
