Gowling WLG Life Sciences, Society & the Law Scholarship
Advances in the life sciences are reshaping how we think about health, innovation, ethics, and regulation. The Gowling WLG Life Sciences, Society, and the Law student scholarship was created to support the next generation of legal leaders who are thinking critically about these shifts and the legal frameworks that will shape what comes next.
The firm’s $5,000 annual scholarship is awarded to the law student who authors the most distinguished paper examining the relationship between the life sciences and society through the legal lens.
The scholarship is offered in connection with Gowling WLG’s annual Life Sciences, Society, and the Law Symposium, which brings together legal and industry perspectives on emerging issues in the sector. The winning paper will be selected by a panel of judges and announced at our annual symposium in fall 2026.
In addition to the $5,000 scholarship award, the successful applicant will be invited to participate in the symposium and recognized across Gowling WLG’s various channels, providing a platform to showcase their work to a broader life sciences audience.
Gowling WLG gratefully acknowledges the leadership and generous funding contribution from Bayer Inc., whose contribution helps foster broader interest in life sciences law and highlights the opportunities available to students considering a career in this dynamic sector.

A 1,500-word paper exploring the following topic:
To what extent should Canada align its life sciences strategy and regulatory framework, including for example intellectual property protection, drug and medical device regulation, and data protection regimes, with international standards to support global competitiveness?
Consider how harmonization with international frameworks (such as those of the United States, the European Union, and multilateral trade agreements), for example via patent protection, regulatory exclusivities, market authorization pathways, and enforcement mechanisms, may affect Canada’s ability to attract investment, foster innovation, and integrate into global life sciences markets. Consider the broader implications of harmonization for domestic research institutions, start-ups, and patients.
Conclude by evaluating whether Canada should pursue closer alignment, selective harmonization, or a more independent regulatory approach in the life sciences sector.
