Canada's global trade strategy in focus: Jacques Shore weighs in on CTV News
Speaking with CTV News on Sept. 26, Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M., a partner in Gowling WLG's Government Affairs and Public Policy Group, shared his insights on Canada's evolving trade relationships and the prime minister's recent meetings with European leaders in London.
As Canada looks to expand trade and political ties with international allies, Jacques emphasized the importance of balancing those efforts with a continued focus on strengthening the Canada-U.S. relationship.
"It's natural for the Prime Minister to reach out to like-minded countries. We need to build stronger bridges with Europe while also thinking creatively about how we work with the U.S."
Adding to the conversation, Jacques addressed growing industry concern around the pace and transparency of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations under CUSMA. He noted that businesses are watching closely as political factors shape the process.
"Industry is worried — my clients are worried. This feels more like a political negotiation than a trade negotiation, and that has to change. We need to dig deep and drive the message home with Governors and state officials in the U.S. This relationship still requires a tremendous amount of focus." [on the Canada-U.S. arrangement]
