Gowling WLG and Mintz Levin recently teamed up to host an engaging panel discussion that explored how the impending presidency of Donald Trump could impact the business, trade and energy landscape in Canada.

The esteemed panel was composed of Gov. William Weld, principal at ML Strategies, former Massachusetts governor and 2016 Libertarian vice presidential candidate; the Hon. John Manley, president and CEO of the Business Council of Canada and former deputy prime minister of Canada; David McFadden, QC, counsel at Gowling WLG; and Bruce Sokler, partner at Mintz Levin.

Peter Lukasiewicz, CEO of Gowling WLG Canada, moderated the conversation, which touched on a number of key points, including:

  • Trump's stance toward major trade agreements such as NAFTA and TPP, and how Canada's trade relationship with the United States - as well as with a number of other countries - could change during his presidency
  • The expected shift in the United States' energy policy and how Canada's oil & gas industry could be affected in the coming years
  • How Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has approached Trump thus far, and what the future could hold for the historic relationship between president and prime minister
