Paula Clancy elected president of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada
Paula Clancy, an Ottawa-based partner in Gowling WLG's Intellectual Property Group, has been elected the next president of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). Paula will assume the role for a one-year term, beginning September 20, 2023.
With more than 27 years' experience helping clients navigate high-stakes trademark matters, Paula is both a leader and role model in the global IP field. In addition to her work with IPIC, she is also a director of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and of the Canadian National Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI Canada).
"I'm honoured to be elected to this role and look forward to leading the institute during a particularly pivotal time for Canadian IP law and the broader IP ecosystem," said Paula. "With disruptive new technologies, modern approaches to regulation and emerging business risks testing the traditional IP playbook every day, it's a responsibility I do not take lightly."
A Law Society of Ontario Certified Specialist in IP (Trademarks), Paula practised at Gowling WLG's predecessor firm between 1994 and 2008, before going on to found and operate a highly respected IP boutique firm. She rejoined Gowling WLG in 2021.
IPIC is Canada's professional association for patent agents, trademark agents and lawyers practicing in all areas of IP law. Its mission is to enhance "members' expertise as trusted intellectual property advisors, and to shape a policy and business environment that encourages the development, use, and value of intellectual property."
