
Bio
Derek Wu is an articling student in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office.
Derek earned his JD at Queen’s University, where he developed an interest in administrative, competition, and regulatory law. During law school, he competed as an oralist in the Adam F Fanaki Competition Law Moot, earning awards for second-best appellant and second-best appellant factum. He also competed in the Wilson Moot.
Derek was named to the Dean’s Honour List in 2025 and won the 2024 CBA Administrative Law Essay Contest for his work on delegated legislation post-Vavilov. He also published on drip pricing in the Canadian Competition Law Review.
Before joining Gowling WLG, Derek gained experience at the Competition Bureau’s International Affairs Directorate, where he supported initiatives related to the international cooperative arrangement between the Competition Bureau and the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
Prior to entering law school, Derek earned his Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Finance and a minor in Economics from the University of British Columbia. He also worked in the finance sector at an impact investment fund.
