Nicolas Cayouette is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Montréal office. He has been a member of the Firm’s Infrastructure and Construction & Engineering groups since 2007. His practice focuses on alternative mode and collaborative projects, partnerships and PPPs as well as matters related to infrastructures, construction, litigation and environment.
Nicolas holds a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnique Montréal which allowed him to develop a specialization in the management of highly complex technical files and projects, particularly in engineering and construction, in which several experts come together to work in various fields. Nicolas has experience advising companies on various subjects regarding the development and design of mechanical and structural components, specifically in the areas of wind energy, construction and aeronautics.
He has participated in various major construction projects over the last few years most of which were over $1 billion—both for public bodies and private corporations. In the diverse matters and projects he acts in, Nicolas liaises with engineers, experts and lawyers to ensure that all technical aspects are accurately and adequately presented in the prepared and submitted materials.
Whether as legal counsel or as litigator, Nicolas diligently highlights aspects or arguments that might otherwise be overlooked by the engineers working on the file, and he drafts them in plain language that can be understood by all stakeholders. Recognized for his ability to work within multidisciplinary teams, Nicolas regularly collaborates with consulting engineering firms, accountants, as well as professors from some of the most prestigious universities.
With his unique profile combining engineering and law, Nicolas is a strategic asset in any file involving complex technical issues, such as developing, designing or implementing major projects.
Nicolas has built an excellent reputation and has been recognized numerous times, having been ranked recently by Chambers Canada (from 2023 until 2025) in the “Projects: PPP and Infrastructure” category, and by Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in the “Lawyers to Watch” category in 2019.
Nicolas is a member of the Austria and Liechtenstein country desk of Gowling WLG and regularly visits clients in these countries.
