Gowling WLG is pleased to award its $5,000 Life Sciences, Society & the Law Scholarship to Dillon Lee, a law student at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School.

Now in its fourth year, the scholarship supports emerging legal leaders in life sciences, with the winning paper selected through a blind review by Gowling WLG's internal committee. Made possible through financial support from Bayer Canada, the scholarship is awarded to the law student who submits the most distinguished paper exploring the relationship between life sciences, society and the law.

Dillon's winning paper, A Canadian Framework for Secondary Use of Health Data in the Life Sciences, examines the legal and policy considerations surrounding the use of health information for purposes beyond its original collection. The research addresses an increasingly important question for Canada's life sciences sector: how to support research and innovation while respecting privacy and protecting sensitive health information.

“As health data becomes increasingly valuable to research and innovation, the legal frameworks governing its use are more important than ever. Dillon's paper addresses a timely issue for Canada's life sciences sector and demonstrates the thoughtful legal analysis we aim to encourage through this scholarship,” said Marc Richard, partner and leader of Gowling WLG’s Life Sciences Group in Canada. “Congratulations to Dillon on this well-deserved achievement. We look forward to seeing her contributions to the legal profession as her career progresses.”

Gowling WLG would like to thank all the students who applied for this year's scholarship.

The application period for the 2027 scholarship will begin in February 2027.
