Digital Services Tax shelved: Laura Gheorghiu weighs in on global tensions in BNN Bloomberg
As countries introduce unilateral digital taxes, concerns about fairness, enforcement and international tension continue to grow. In a recent interview with BNN Bloomberg, Laura Gheorghiu offered perspective on the shifting landscape—particularly as Canada backs away from its own Digital Services Tax.
“The DST are the kinds of taxes that are targeted by countries. There is a view that this revenue is not being addressed by the current tax systems, because those systems were not designed to capture revenue. There is no connection to a country other than the user being in that country.”
Canada is now repealing the DST as part of a broader effort to keep trade negotiations on track, with hopes of reaching a new agreement by July 21, 2025.
