What will prorogation mean for Canada? Gowling WLG lawyers consider the implications with top media
On January 6, 2025, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he will step down from his role as soon as a replacement is chosen to lead the Liberal Party of Canada. To forestall a likely vote of non-confidence during this period, Trudeau asked Governor General Mary Simone to prorogue Parliament until March 24, a request that was granted.
Since Trudeau’s announcement, several of our lawyers have been featured across prominent media outlets, including BNN Bloomberg, CBC, and CTV News, offering their insights on what this decision means for Canadian businesses. From economic uncertainty to legislative delays impacting critical industries, members of our firm have been contributing to this important conversation from several key angles.
