Julia Kappler is a partner in Gowling WLG's Montreal office, where she practises in the area of advertising, marketing and regulatory law. Her practice covers a range of commercial issues with particular emphasis on consumer protection law, Quebec language laws, privacy and e-commerce matters, class actions, and social media legal issues.
She advises national and international corporations in the retail, automotive, medical, financial services, and telecom industries with respect to their provincial and federal legal obligations. Her main areas of practice include ad copy reviews and pre-approvals for digital media, TV, radio, print and social media; packaging and labelling review; sponsorship agreements; contest and promotion design and review; class action litigation; children's advertising; French language requirements; and privacy law.
Julia also has experience in commercial litigation, notably in the areas of contractual disputes, civil liability, and manufacturer liability. She has represented clients in front of the Court of Quebec, the Superior Court of Quebec and the Court of Appeal of Quebec. She has also been involved in international arbitration and in the preparation of files for the Supreme Court of Canada.
Julia holds a bachelor of civil law and a juris doctor in common law from Université de Montréal. In the course of her studies, she completed a certificate in Chinese law at China University of Political Science and Law and a certificate in international and comparative law at the University of San Diego. As a law student, she worked as a research assistant in the field of constitutional law and volunteered at the Concordia legal information clinic.
Julia also completed a bachelor of arts in psychology and political science from McGill University, where she graduated with distinction.
Julia first joined the firm as a law student in 2014 and, subsequently, as an articling student, before being hired as an associate in 2016.
She practices law in both English and French.
