Lorne W. Segal

Lorne Segal is a senior partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, practicing in the areas of mergers and acquisitions (M&A), corporate commercial, lending and corporate finance, and bankruptcy, insolvency and corporate restructuring. Lorne and his team represent private and public companies of all sizes - from owner-operated businesses to multinational corporates - combining strong technical skills with a practical approach and sound business judgment to get deals done and help clients succeed.

Lorne's M&A practice focuses on the mid-market, and on both buy and sell-side mandates. Lorne's M&A team includes core M&A practitioners and subject area experts from across Canada and around our global Firm. Lorne's transaction expertise spans various sectors, including tech, defense, media, data centres, aerospace, life sciences & pharma, manufacturing, food & agriculture, telecom, and financial services. Much of Lorne's transactional M&A work is for multi-national public and private companies on their Canadian deals.

In the lending and finance sector, Lorne represents domestic and foreign banks, insurance companies, private equity and venture capitalists in mid-market and larger transactions. In the area of restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency, Lorne represents creditors, debtors, investors, and trustees/receivers. His expertise includes distressed M&A.

Recognized as a leading lawyer in his field by clients and peers, Lorne is listed in the 2022 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a top-ranked professional in the areas of M&A, Corporate Commercial Law, Corporate Mid-Market, Banking & Financial Institutions, and Insolvency & Financial Restructuring. Lorne is recognized in the 2022 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law. Lorne was named an Acritas Star in their Global Acritas Rankings based on interviews with 4,300 general counsel and legal sector clients around the world.

Lorne served a four-year term as Gowling WLG's Firm Managing Partner, Internal and as a member of the firm's Executive Committee. He previously served on the Firm's Board of Trustees. Lorne has completed the Rotman / Telfer Corporate Directors Program offered by the Institute of Corporate Directors and holds an ICD.D designation.

An active member of the Ottawa community, Lorne is Chair and President of the Ottawa Jewish Community School Board of Directors. Lorne is a past board member of Ronald McDonald House, and the Soloway Jewish Community Centre.

  • Represented Bell Canada in connection with its $275 million acquisition of 360Networks and Group GT
  • Represented Bell Canada in numerous mid-market acquisitions ranging in value from $10 - $100 million
  • Represented McDonald's Restaurants in connection with the sale of various supplier facilities
  • Represented Brookfield in connection with its US$200 million financing and ultimate acquisition of the Kemess Gold Mine in British Columbia
