Happy New Year from Gowling WLG's Pensions team! We're kicking off 2022 with the first in our new series of Scheme Sessions webinars focusing on Trustee governance and the Pension Schemes Act 2021. The three sessions, which will be held in January and February, will include a short introduction by Head of Pensions at Gowling WLG, Jason Coates, followed by discussions between guest speakers Louise Sivyer from the Pensions Regulator, Sarah Horan of Independent Trustee Services, Margaret Snowdon OBE and Nicholas Hill, Barrister at Outer Temple Chambers.

All of the webinars will start at 12:00 and will last approximately 1 hour, including time for questions.

Speakers - Sarah Horan (Independent Trustee Services) and Louise Sivyer (the Pensions Regulator): Thursday 27 January 2022 at 12:00 - 13:00
Governance: What's New?

Jason Coates (Head of Pensions, Gowling WLG) will be chairing this discussion on what's new and what's on the horizon for trustees in 2022. In particular, we will be focusing on the new Single Code and what trustees should be doing to prepare for that. In this context, we are looking forward to getting Louise's insight on the Pensions Regulator's expectations of trustees and talking to her about the requirement for an Own Risk Assessment. Sarah will be covering another hot topic for trustees: diversity and inclusion on the trustee board and, from her experience, the practical steps that trustees can take to ensure they are operating as effectively as possible.

Speakers – Margaret Snowdon OBE (President of The Pensions Administration Standards Association) and Maddy Frost (Legal Director at Gowling WLG): Wednesday 2 February 2022 at 12:00 - 13:00
The New Transfer Regime

In this second session, we will be focusing on the new transfer regulations and how trustees and administrators are dealing with the obligations in practice. We will talk about live issues that trustees are grappling with, "safe lists" and the "risk-based approach" to decision-making advocated by the Pensions Regulator. We are very much looking forward to hearing from Margaret Snowdon OBE on these issues and getting her insight on best practice.

Speakers – Charlotte Scholes (Principal Associate, Gowling WLG) and Nicholas Hill (Outer Temple Chambers): Wednesday 9 February 2022 at 12:00 - 13:00
Governance: Don't Forget the Basics

In our third session, we will be reviewing the basics of good governance, including decision making, managing conflicts, trustee minutes and ways to mitigate risk. We will identify some of the common pitfalls we see in practice and the potential consequences when mistakes are made. As specialists in pensions disputes, Charlotte Scholes (Principal Associate, Gowling WLG) and Nicholas Hill (Barrister, Outer Temple Chambers) will be sharing their experience and giving practical advice.

During the sessions, the speakers will provide useful information and insights, as well as practical tips on their respective topics, and will answer as many questions as possible in the time available.
