Gowling WLG has been recognized as a top international firm in the areas of real estate and real estate investment trusts (REITs) by the China Business Law Journal.
The firm earned a 2016 China Business Law Award for delivering outstanding client service on a wide range of significant Canadian real estate transactions for Chinese clients.
“Gowling WLG has a high level of professionalism in this practice area, good quality of work and gives valuable advice,” said a client from a commercial property company in Canada.
The China Business Law Awards are based on hundreds of nominations received primarily from China-focused corporate counsel, senior managers and legal professionals around the world. Law firm clients are consulted through surveys to determine their level of satisfaction with the services provided by their firms.
Notably, the journal also named Gowling WLG among its top overseas 2016 Deals of the Year for its participation in Xiwang Food’s acquisition of Iovate for a total consideration of CAD$730 million.
Gowling WLG provided Canadian transactional support on the complex deal, with a team led by Ottawa-based partners Cynthia Elderkin, Melanie Polowin, Colin Green and Lewis Retik, as well as Vancouver’s Rob Fashler and Toronto’s Ian Macdonald.
The deal demonstrated an emerging trend in China’s outbound M&A transactions, with sellers increasingly getting involved in the country’s growth story. It was also notable for the speed at which it cleared regulatory approvals in Canada, the US and China — especially amidst rising national security review concerns.
With offices in Guangzhou and Beijing, Gowling WLG has an impressive record of helping international clients make deep inroads into China and assisting Chinese companies on offshore transactions worldwide.
