For the very first time, Hydro-Québec has released a detailed power grid capacity mapping, giving project developers and large electricity consumers clearer insight into areas where new connections to the grid are feasible, and where strain on the system could also pose a significant risk. This initiative marks a notable step forward in transparency and project planning.
The mapping shows:
The mapping does not reflect Hydro-Québec's overall energy capacity, but rather the areas where projects can connect to the existing grid, as of December 2025.

Currently, insufficient power system capacity is one of the main reasons behind delays, downsizing and the cancellation of power and electrification projects. Insufficient capacity at the connection point may:
In many cases, projects fail (or face significant delays) not because of land tenure, financing, or permit-related issues, but rather due to grid capacity issues that are identified too late during the development process. Understanding a power grid’s capacities is a key element of project due diligence, particularly when it comes to helping developers mitigate the following risks:
The power grid capacity mapping published by Hydro-Québec is a key tool that can help reduce these risks, improve project design, and avoid unexpected costs and delays.
