Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co's work in the community has brought a double award win this month.
Combined HR Solutions associate Ruth Ormston received the title of 'Champion of Justice' at the London Legal Support Trust (LLST) Awards. The firm also scooped an award recognising its long-standing support of the annual LLST walks.
The award recognises Ruth's commitment to supporting the work-life balance organisation Working Families. Involved with the charity since 2009, she has given time and expertise to its free Legal Helpline which offers parents and carers advice on employment rights.
Ruth has also instigated wider support by bringing together a team of Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co people to help respond to the charity's growing case load. As a result, it has become an ongoing pro bono client of the firm.
Head of corporate responsibility Lorna Gavin said: "I am deeply impressed with Ruth's commitment to Working Families. She has not only given her time - often on her non-working day - to assist with the Working Families legal helpline, but also taken the initiative to approach Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co about extending this support.
"One of my favourite definitions of corporate responsibility is 'doing the right thing, even when no one is looking'. Ruth exemplifies this spirit and so it is fantastic to see her efforts recognised with this external award."
Ruth's nomination from Working Families cites the "fantastic commitment and support" it receives from her on a weekly basis and the strength of her "commitment to justice for all".
Leon Clowes at Working Families added: "It is thanks to Ruth that Working Families has a strong advice infrastructure in place, helping to ensure that our Helpline gives the very best service to families in need. The legal advice she and her team of volunteers provide in conjunction with our advisors is directly helping parents and carers stay in work and keeping these families out of poverty. Ruth richly deserves to be recognised for her outstanding contribution."
The awards ceremony was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in London on 23 October 2014 as part of the LLST's tenth birthday celebrations. Awarded by Bob Nightingale, Chief Executive of LLST, they celebrate the 'unsung heroes' providing vital support in law centres, pro bono teams and legal charities based on nominations across the legal and charity sector.
The evening proved to be a double celebration for the firm as Ruth also collected an award for its support of the annual LLST walks. Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co is one of 22 organisations which have taken part in every single walk organised by LLST over the past ten years. Funds raised by the walks support legal advice centres which give free legal advice to those who cannot afford it.
Working Families helps nearly 3,000 distressed parents and carers every year across the country. As well as running a free Legal Helpline, the charity works closely with employers to support them in creating workplaces which encourage work-life balance.
Formed on 1 May 2014, Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co has 1,250 people, including 770 lawyers, operating from Birmingham, Brussels, Dubai, Guangzhou, London, Monaco, Moscow, Munich, Paris and Singapore. It is the only law firm to feature in the UK's Best Workplaces, as identified by the Great Place to Work Institute.
