Domenic Crolla receives 2021 OBA Susan Hilary Davidson Memorial Award for Excellence in Health Law

Ottawa-based partner Domenic Crolla is the recipient of the 2021 Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Susan Hilary Davidson Memorial Award for Excellence in Health Law, presented by the OBA's Health Law Section.

Named after the late Susan Hilary Davidson – a dedicated member of the OBA and a leader of the Health Law Section – the award honours and celebrates the outstanding achievements of OBA members who practise in the area of health law in the province of Ontario.

"Gowling WLG has a strong tradition of leadership in the field of health law. Our engagement goes beyond file work and involves serving on health law panels/committees, public interest advocacy and continuing legal education," said Donald Dow, leader of the firm's Medical Defence Group. "Dom epitomizes our team's commitment and professional excellence in this field. He has set a very high bar for the rest of us to follow."

Crolla's legal practice focuses on professional and product liability, health law and medical liability matters. He has served as lead general counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association since 2013, and has litigated many complex medical liability cases in both trial and appellate settings. He is also a member of a number of professional societies including the Ontario Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association, International Bar Association, and the Advocates Society.

This year, Crolla is also a recipient of the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association Industry Defender Award. The MPL Association is the leading international association representing entities doing business in the medical professional liability arena. The Industry Defender award is given to defense attorneys to recognize their exceptional work in defense of health care professionals and on behalf of medical liability providers.

Outside of the firm, Crolla is the editor of the LexisNexis Canada's Electronic Healthcare Law Review, and is honorary counsel to REACH, a national, non-profit charitable organization for persons with disabilities. He is also a former professor in Osgoode's LL.M in Health Law program.
