Gowling WLG climbs in H1 2022 M&A league table rankings

18 July 2022

Refinitiv has published its M&A legal advisory league tables for the first half of 2022[1]. Gowling WLG's continuing strong deal numbers in Canada, the UK, France and Europe, resulted in improved rankings compared to the same period last year, despite global economic headwinds which have led to a significant decline in overall M&A activity for law firms generally.

Refinitiv credited the firm with:

  • 129 global deals tied for a #13 ranking among law firms worldwide, up from #25 for the same period last year
  • 78 Canadian deals for a #2 ranking among law firms advising on Canadian deals, up from #4 for the same period last year
  • 44 UK mid-market[2] deals for a #5 ranking among law firms advising on UK deals, up from #11 for the same period last year
  • 13 French mid-market deals tied for a #20 ranking among law firms advising on French deals, up from #117 for the same period last year
  • 63 European mid-market deals for a #10 ranking among law firms advising on European deals, up from #24 for the same period last year

These results are notable considering the fact that Refinitiv has reported a drop in overall volume of M&A deals for many key regions: down 17 per cent for global deals, down 31 per cent for Canadian deals and down 10 per cent for UK mid-market deals.

Quarter after quarter, in all economic environments, Gowling WLG is regularly ranked among leading law firms for M&A transactions. Combining legal knowledge and business acumen, members of the firm's M&A practice serve as trusted advisors to a range of domestic and international clients across all major industry sectors.
