Selena Kim becomes first Canadian named to National Association of Women Lawyers Rising List

07 March 2022

Selena Kim, a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, has become the first Canadian named to the US-based National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) Rising List.

The Rising List is comprised of individuals who are, "advancing in their careers, helping others advance in their careers, and/or fighting to advance women under the law," according to NAWL.

Selena joins more than two dozen other recipients named to this year's list. Their workplaces vary widely, from the US Department of Labor and US Air Force JAG Corps to major players in tech, academia, risk management, and the auto industry, along with a number of private firms.

"It's a tremendous honour to be named alongside so many incredible women," says Selena, who practises in the areas of intellectual property litigation, patent prosecution, and strategic intellectual property portfolio management.

"We're all working hard to advocate for women in the legal profession, and being recognized by NAWL means so much to me," she adds. "I am so proud to have been named along with my fellow recipients from across the legal industry."

The Rising List is far from new territory for Selena. She was previously certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in intellectual property (patent, trademark, and copyright), and was the first woman to have achieved this designation for patents in the Law Society's history. In 2020, Canadian Lawyer named her one of the "Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada."

With roots that stretch to the late-19th century, NAWL strives to provide leadership, a collective voice, and essential resources to advance women in the legal profession, as well as to advocate for the equality of women under the law. Among other initiatives, it offers regional and national programming focused on giving women lawyers the legal and business skills necessary to succeed.
