Mark Tamminga named one of Canada's most influential lawyers

04 August 2015

Mark Tamminga, a partner in Gowlings' Hamilton office and leader of the firm's innovation initiatives, has been named one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer.

The magazine's much-anticipated annual list recognizes prominent lawyers who have made a significant impact on both the Canadian legal profession and society. Tamminga is listed in the Changemakers category, which recognizes lawyers who have been instrumental in enacting change across a wide range of legal areas.

"Mark has dedicated his career to legal innovation, and has implemented numerous processes that have made our work more efficient," said Scott Jolliffe, Gowlings chair and CEO. "He is committed to finding new ways in which we can provide our clients with better service, results and value. We're tremendously proud - but not at all surprised - to see Mark's name on this prestigious list."

Tamminga has played an essential role in the development and launch of Gowlings Practical™, the firm's legal project management platform introduced earlier this year. Using collaborative software designed specifically for the legal environment, the platform helps keep client matters on track, on time and on budget by providing a clear project plan for all types of legal issues.

Gowlings Practical is based on an approach that Tamminga calls the "structured delivery of legal services," and offers participants immediate, 24/7 access to key information about their matter - from who's working on the file and how it's progressing to how much it's expected to cost and how long it will take to complete.

A fellow of the College of Law Practice Management, Tamminga is engaged in a host of other important firm projects, including initiatives related to security preparedness, machine learning, practice modelling, change management and compensation mechanics. By tackling these issues head-on, he is helping to ensure that Gowlings continues to deliver what its clients have come to expect: greater cost-certainty, efficiency and value.

In January 2016, Gowlings will take its focus on legal innovation to the world stage as it joins forces with Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co to launch a new international legal practice called Gowling WLG. With the knowledge and expertise of innovators like Mark Tamminga, Gowling WLG will be a global leader in innovation and value, offering clients creative and flexible options in service, pricing and delivery models.
