Gowling WLG congratulates client Digital Medical Experts Inc. on 2019 Sci Innovation Competition win

06 June 2019

Gowling WLG is delighted to congratulate its client Digital Medical Experts (DME) Inc. on its recent success at the 2019 Sci Innovation Competition in Toronto - one of Canada's foremost competitions for tech ventures.

DME Inc. received the top score in the information technology category. The startup was selected as one of 20 teams (from a field of about 200) to represent Canada at the China (Shenzhen) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, where one judge described their technology as "far ahead of our time." This recognition follows upon the Digitech award given to DME Inc. by the Paris-based Universal Biotech company. In addition to offering the €5000 prize, Universal will assist DME to further develop it's online profile.

Spearheaded by researchers from McMaster University and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton - and with the support of the McMaster Industry Liaison Office - DME Inc. develops technology that leverages machine learning analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) data to establish personalized psychiatric diagnoses.

What's more, DME Inc's technology uses the same data to determine the optimal approach to treatment - allowing mental health clinicians to make treatment decisions based on statistical analysis, as opposed to onerous trial and error experiments. Using portable EEG headsets their technology can be deployed in any office with internet access.

Alex Ross, counsel in Gowling WLG's Hamilton office, assisted DME Inc. in patenting the cutting-edge technology, which holds the potential to revolutionize the field of psychiatry.
