04 April 2019

Gowling WLG is pleased to welcome Jeffrey Roode as a partner in the firm's Toronto office.

Widely respected in his field, Roode focuses his practice on corporate and commercial transactions in the payments and FinTech sectors. He regularly acts for payment networks, banks, merchants, processors, startups, service providers and other industry participants in a variety of complex commercial transactions. These include joint venture agreements, licensing arrangements and commercial contracts.

Roode also has significant experience advising clients in these industries on regulatory and customer-facing issues.

"As Canada's payments and FinTech sectors continue to evolve, so too does the surrounding regulatory and commercial landscape," said Mark Ledwell, managing partner of Gowling WLG's Toronto office. "Jeff has a formidable track record of helping businesses navigate this dynamic — and frequently challenging — space. He will be a strong addition to the firm's growing FinTech practice and a valuable resource for our clients."

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Roode spent ten years as in-house counsel at one of Canada's largest banks, where he served as lead counsel to the bank's credit card business.

Gowling WLG operates at the forefront of FinTech's emerging business landscape, helping companies understand and navigate the complex regulatory and operational challenges that new products and technologies bring with them. Last year, Gowling WLG was named Law Firm of the Year at the 4th Annual Canadian FinTech & AI Awards and recognized as one of Canada's top law firms in the Chambers FinTech 2019 guide.
