Eminent Canadian IP litigator Ron Dimock joins Gowling WLG

06 January 2020

Gowling WLG is delighted to welcome Ron Dimock to our global intellectual property group, effective Jan. 1, 2020. He will be based in our Toronto office.

Described by Chambers as the "guru of IP law in Canada," Dimock has appeared as counsel in many of this country's landmark patent, trademark and copyright cases over the course of his 40-year career - including more than 50 trials before the Federal Court and 30 appeals before the Supreme Court of Canada and other appellate courts. He also holds the distinction of having participated in more patent trials and appeals than any other lawyer in Canada.

In 1994, Dimock co-founded Dimock Stratton LLP, which quickly became a significant player in Canada's IP litigation landscape and was consistently ranked among the country's top IP boutiques.

Outside of his litigation practice, Dimock remains one of Canada's leading arbitrators and mediators. At Gowling WLG, he will complement his advocacy work by offering his services as an arbitrator and mediator of IP disputes, and as an expert witness on Canadian IP law and practice, through his own office under the name DIMOCK.

"Ron continues to have a tremendous influence on Canadian IP practice as a litigator, arbitrator, mentor and thought-leader," said Robert MacDonald, head of Gowling WLG's Intellectual Property Group in Canada. "We look forward to having Ron on our team as we continue to develop Gowling WLG's position as one of the world's top providers of IP solutions."

In addition to being a sought-after speaker and prolific author, Dimock has enjoyed an esteemed teaching career. For more than 20 years, he taught a masters-level IP course at York University's Osgoode Hall Law School, where he continues to give an annual lecture on patent law. He also previously taught courses at Queen's University and McGill University.

"As Canada's economy becomes ever more knowledge-driven, Gowling WLG continues to deliver sophisticated IP dispute resolution strategies that not only meet the demands of today, but anticipate the challenges of tomorrow," said Dimock. "With this in mind, I look forward to working together with my new colleagues to achieve outstanding results for our clients."
