Gowling WLG announces 'Pensions for Purpose' membership

10 June 2020

International law firm Gowling WLG has partnered with Pensions for Purpose as it continues to focus on helping its clients manage the challenges and opportunities relating to environmental, social and governance (ESG) requirements.

The firm's Diversity Award-winning Pensions team joins the Pensions for Purpose initiative as an 'Influencer Member'. A collaboration of impact managers, pension funds, social enterprises and others involved in impact investment, Pensions for Purpose aims to promote understanding of sustainable investing, through content creation, media, and thought leadership.

Gowling WLG joins 78 other 'Influencers' on the platform, working jointly to further the conversation and advise pensions funds on responsible investment, fostering principles of sustainability, inclusivity and corporate governance for the pensions sector.

Partner and Head of Pensions, Jason Coates, said: "Pensions for Purpose is a fantastic initiative, of which Gowling WLG are proud to be a part. As a Pensions team, we are committed to providing further assistance to our trustee clients as they grapple with their legal duties relating to ESG and look to move from well-drafted written statements to meaningful actions that drive good outcomes for members of schemes and society more widely. Through our membership, we can continue to play a key part in the industry conversation to redefine the most pressing issues, and collaborate with peers to advance understanding of responsible investment."

Gowling WLG's market-leading Pensions team provides sophisticated, authoritative, practical pensions and benefits advice to clients on all aspects of UK pensions law, in a complex and constantly evolving sector. Increasingly involved in supporting clients in their implementation of responsible investing, the team provides training for trustees on ESG issues, assisting with the drafting of statements of investment principles and responsible investment policies, and negotiating agreements and side letters with investment managers in relation to pooled funds.

As a firm, Gowling WLG knows there is strength in diversity & inclusion and sustainability, and it is therefore our mission to continue to embed ESG values and principles into our own DNA. In so doing, we're committed to creating a better, more inclusive workplace for our people, while providing superior service to our clients across all sectors. This latest development builds on Gowling WLG's UN Global Compact pledge to deliver on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments and encourage industry-wide social consciousness.
