Gowling WLG expands IP team in China, offering clients enhanced end-to-end services

28 September 2021

In a move designed to give clients an end-to-end service experience in one of the world's fastest-growing markets, Gowling WLG is pleased to announce a significant expansion of its intellectual property (IP) practice and relationships in China.

Here's what this means for our clients:

Enhanced IP bench strength

Earlier this year, Gowling WLG worked closely with Clyde & Co. to finalize the transfer of the latter's Chinese IP practice, giving Gowling WLG clients access to a broader range of IP services.

As previously reported, Elliot Papageorgiou, a sought-after IP professional with more than 20 years' experience working in China, has joined as Head of IP Strategy in China. Qualified in England & Wales, New York, Victoria (Australia) and Hong Kong, Elliot enjoys a formidable profile throughout China and is strongly positioned to help Chinese and foreign clientele navigate the country's intricate regulatory requirements.

Elliot is accompanied by a team of IP professionals and support staff, all previously based at Clyde & Co. and each of whom brings extensive local knowledge and advanced technical skills to the firm's growing practice.

Comprehensive end-to-end service

As part of the expansion in China, Gowling WLG has forged an exclusive referral arrangement with Chongqing Aquila Law Firm (Aquila Law). This arrangement will allow Gowling WLG to provide clients with enhanced, seamless access to the Chinese courts and intellectual property offices.

Based in Chongqing, Aquila Law's professionals offer a comprehensive suite of patent and trademark services, portfolio management and enforcement solutions across the full spectrum of IP rights – with sophisticated technical strength in biotech, advanced manufacturing, aviation, tech and engineering, among other areas.

A gateway into China's major commercial centres

Gowling WLG has opened a new office in Shanghai, an extension of the firm's intellectual property agency in Beijing. This office will complement the firm's existing locations in Beijing and Guangzhou, as well as Aquila Law's office in Chongqing, which together offer clients an array of IP and corporate services. This expanded footprint increases direct entry points into China's major commercial hubs, while enhancing the ability to serve clients wherever their needs arise.

"As the opportunities presented in China become more attractive, we recognise that our presence in one of the world's most important markets must continue to evolve in turn," said David Fennell, Co-Chair of Gowling WLG's International Board. "This expansion will ensure our clients around the world have access to seamless and sophisticated legal services throughout China's major regions."

"Gowling WLG and its predecessor firms have an accomplished history of helping clients harness the full rewards of China's economy," said Peter Lukasiewicz, Co-Chair of Gowling WLG's International Board. "This expansion builds upon that legacy, offering our clients – both inside and outside of China – an array of new and exciting opportunities."
