Guy Régimbald appointed to the Federal Court of Canada

13 October 2022

Guy Régimbald, a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office and national practice group leader of the firm's Administrative Law Practice Group, has been appointed a judge of the Federal Court of Canada. His appointment takes effect immediately.

Since joining Gowling WLG in 2007, Justice Régimbald has built a robust practice focused on constitutional and administrative law, Indigenous law, trademark and copyright law, and taxation. Over the course of his career, he has appeared on multiple occasions as lead or co-counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada, including in many high-profile cases.

A prolific writer, Justice Régimbald is the author and co-author of several LexisNexis publications, including Canadian Administrative Law (3rd edition, 2021) and The Law of the Canadian Constitution (2nd edition, 2017). He is also a co-author of the Supreme Court of Canada Practice (Carswell), the definitive guide to practice and procedure at Canada's highest Court.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Justice Régimbald clerked for many honourable justices, including Mr. Justice Rothstein and Mr. Justice Major at the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as for Mr. Justice (now Chief Justice) Marc Noël at the Federal Court of Appeal. He also worked for the Department of Justice in the Constitutional and Administrative Law Section and for the Privy Council of Canada, and taught constitutional law, administrative law and international law at the University of Ottawa.

"Guy's appointment is a strong testament to his deep commitment not only to the practice of law, but also to this country's fundamental legal institutions," said Wayne Warren, managing partner of Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. "While we are sorry to lose him, the Court and the public will be well-served with Justice Régimbald on the Bench."
