Gowling WLG supports John Callaghan for Bencher

28 March 2023

John Callaghan, partner at Gowling WLG, is running for election as Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario.

This is an important election for lawyers practising in Ontario. The governance of the Law Society has been called into question by controversy that has distracted it from its core mandate.

John is running as part of the Bencher Good Governance Coalition alongside other lawyers and paralegals who believe that the Law Society of Ontario requires competent, experienced and representative leadership to maintain the profession's independence, and to regulate itself in the public interest.

"I have known John Callaghan for over 20 years and have admired his balanced, level-headed approach in representing the profession as a Bencher," said Steve McKersie, CEO of Gowling WLG Canada. "I have no hesitation endorsing John and the other Good Governance Coalition candidates in this election, and fully support their campaign to protect the integrity of the Law Society of Ontario."

An accomplished lawyer, teacher, mentor and writer, John has had a distinguished 35-year career. His experience includes two terms as Bencher (from 2011 to 2019), as well as 25 years as a member of Ontario's Civil Rules Committee. This unique background makes him a strong asset to both the Law Society of Ontario and the legal profession in general.

Voting for the 2023 Bencher election runs from April 19-28, 2023.
