Gowling WLG client's counterfeiting case garners Chinese IPR recognition

20 June 2024

The Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China has recognised a counterfeiting case, in which Gowling WLG acted for Dyson Technology Limited, as one of the "Top 10 Typical IPR Protection Cases" in 2023.

The successful outcome of this case also garnered recognition from the British Consulate-General Guangzhou, which highlighted it as a significant achievement in intellectual property (IP) protection and commended the collaborative efforts of the public security authorities and Gowling WLG.

In March 2023, Gowling WLG worked closely with the Tongling Municipal Public Security Bureau to investigate the production and sale of counterfeit “Dyson” goods. This investigation soon led to organised raids in Guangdong Province, which in turn resulted in the dismantling of 10 operations and the seizure of 1,168 fake Dyson hairdryers and over 30,000 accessories. All together, the coordinated effort led to the apprehension of 16 suspects and disrupted a complex network of illicit activities worth over 40 million Chinese yuan (RMB).

Daniela Shaw, a principal associate in Gowling WLG's Guangzhou office, led a global team that worked closely with various authorities, demonstrating successful inter-agency cooperation in protecting foreign companies' IP rights.

“This case exemplifies the importance of collaborative efforts in upholding IP rights,” said Daniela. “Working closely with Chinese authorities, we've achieved a significant victory that underscores our mutual commitment to supporting and protecting global brands."
