Gowling WLG is pleased to announce the appointment of Georgios Chic as Partner in its Banking and Finance team, spearheading the firm's Derivatives and Structured Finance practice.

Georgios brings a wealth of experience as a senior lawyer with deep expertise in finance and derivatives, having acted in both transactional and advisory capacities.

A financial services specialist, Georgios offers a unique understanding of both the legal and commercial dimensions of structured finance, banking, and regulation. He also holds an MBA from London Business School and brings an entrepreneurial flair that complements his legal expertise.

He specialises in complex financial instruments and has advised on some of the most sophisticated and innovative structures in the market. His comprehensive experience across private practice and in-house spans derivatives, structured products, and debt capital markets (DCM), with additional exposure to leveraged finance, high yield, and structured debt.

Georgios' track record includes advising on groundbreaking transactions such as synthetic securitisations for major financial institutions, credit-linked notes for asset managers seeking alternative investment structures or additional yield, and bespoke hedging strategies for corporate treasuries and sponsors. His client portfolio encompasses global investment banks, alternative investment funds, and institutional investors seeking innovative approaches to capital deployment and risk management.

Georgios previously consulted Gowling WLG on longevity swaps and his return marks a strategic move to build out the firm's specialist finance offering. He will work closely with colleagues in pensions, corporate insurance and reinsurance, private credit, as well as the Energy Transition, Infrastructure and Projects (ETIP) team, to deliver integrated solutions across sectors.

He said: "I'm excited to be joining Gowling WLG at such a pivotal moment. The opportunity to establish and grow a specialist finance practice within a firm that values collaboration and innovation is incredibly compelling. I look forward to working with colleagues across the firm to deliver high-impact solutions for our clients, and to contribute to the firm's thought leadership as we build out our financial products and markets offering."

Stuart Young, Practice Leader for Corporate, Finance and Tax, added: "Georgios' arrival is a significant milestone in our growth journey. His expertise and energy will help us elevate our offering and open new doors across the financial services sector. He brings a rare combination of technical excellence and commercial acumen. His appointment strengthens our ability to deliver sophisticated solutions in a fast-evolving financial landscape, and I'm excited to see the impact he'll make across our client base."

The appointment reflects the firm's continued investment in high-growth areas and its commitment to expanding its finance capabilities. It builds on the firm's Corporate Practice Group recording a strong start to the 2025/26 financial year - reporting a 32% year-on-year increase in financial performance.
