Drawing on our national infrastructure and construction capabilities, Gowling WLG is pleased to act as counsel to Bell Canada in connection with the development of its proposed 300 MW AI data centre in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, near Regina, Saskatchewan.

Announced on March 16, 2026, the project represents one of the largest digital infrastructure investments in Canada and forms a key part of Bell’s national strategy to expand sovereign AI and data capacity across the country. Once complete, the facility is expected to be the largest purpose-built AI data centre development in Canada, supporting advanced AI compute capabilities for enterprise, research and public sector use.

Gowling WLG is advising Bell Canada on construction and related contracting matters for the project, which is being funded by Bell through incremental capital expenditures of approximately C$1.7 billion.

“Delivering critical infrastructure at this scale and level of complexity requires strong alignment across owners, contractors, consultants and advisors,” said Scott Fletcher, Gowling WLG partner and client team lead. “We’re proud to support Bell on this landmark project, which represents such a significant investment in Canada’s digital infrastructure.”

Bell announced on May 4, 2026 that Regina-based Hipperson Construction and a number of Saskatchewan-based contractors were already engaged on the early stages of the project, and on May 14, 2026, announced that Bird Construction will serve as lead construction partner for the project and Regina-based Alton Tangedal Architect Ltd. will serve as architect of record, each alongside several Saskatchewan-based contractors and project partners.

In addition to Fletcher, Gowling WLG’s team includes partners Ted Betts, Matthew Bernardo and Mark Platteel, and associate Rasan Sahota.
