Alyssa Flaherty-Spence

Alyssa Flaherty-Spence is an associate in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, practising in the Indigenous Group and Business Law Department. Her practice focuses on corporate commercial, Indigenous Law and Canada's North. Alyssa works on mergers and acquisition transactions, reviewing NDAs and funding agreements. Alyssa also advises Indigenous clients on Community Trust matters. Alyssa works on Indigenous specific claims and advocacy, including class actions such as the Indian Day Schools (McLean) Settlement and advising Indigenous clients on different Federal legislation.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Alyssa worked extensively with Indigenous organizations, particularly with matters within Inuit Nunangat. Alyssa has also worked with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik Legal Services, the Government of Nunavut, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

Alyssa is a graduate of the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, with a specialization in Indigenous Law. She is also of Indigenous ancestry – Inuit and Cree – and calls Iqaluit, Nunavut and Tataskweyak Cree Nation her second homes. Alyssa currently sits as president and chair of Inuuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Children, Youth and Families. She is also a member of the Community Liaison and Resources Committee (CLRC) for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
