Alyssa Flaherty-Spence

Alyssa Flaherty-Spence is an associate in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office, practising in the Indigenous Group.  Her practice focuses on Indigenous Law and Canada’s North. Alyssa works on Indigenous claims and litigation matters, including class actions such as the Indian Day Schools (McLean) Settlement.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Alyssa worked extensively with Indigenous organizations, particularly with matters within Inuit Nunangat. Alyssa has also worked with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Maliiganik Tukisiiniakvik Legal Services, the Government of Nunavut, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. Prior to her call to the Ontario Bar in 2018, she articled with Dubuc-Osland Barrister and Solicitors.

Alyssa is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, with a specialization in Indigenous Law. She is also of Indigenous ancestry – Inuit and Cree – and calls Iqaluit, Nunavut and Tataskweyak Cree Nation her second homes. Alyssa currently sits as president and chair of Inuuqatigiit Centre for Inuit Children, Youth and Families. She is also a member of the Community Liaison and Resources Committee (CLRC) for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
