Asim is a Toronto-based partner in Gowling WLG's Corporate Restructuring, Insolvency and Advisory Group. He has substantial experience guiding clients through complex restructurings and special situations, particularly where successful outcomes require a high degree of creativity, business acumen or consensus building among multiple stakeholder groups.
He regularly assists distressed companies in navigating both formal and informal restructuring processes by using a results-driven and cost-effective approach. He advises boards of directors of public and private distressed corporations assess strategic options and alternatives, including conflicts of interest and directors’ liability issues.
With an extensive background in both domestic and cross-border matters, Asim frequently represents foreign representatives and multinational corporations in cross-border insolvency proceedings, particularly in US-Canadian cross-border engagements.
Additionally, Asim supports purchasers and distressed investors in acquiring distressed assets and businesses. He aids senior and subordinate secured creditors in enforcing and protecting their rights during insolvency proceedings and informal workouts. He also advises financial institutions and ad hoc creditor committees through complex and/or unique creditor-enforcement situations.
Asim has been recognized by multiple legal publications, including being named a Lexpert Rising Star in 2023 and a Stand-out Lawyer by Thomson Reuters in 2024. He has also been featured in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for Insolvency and Financial Restructuring from 2022 to 2024.
