Chris Kay, PhD

Chris is an intellectual property professional who works at the crossroads of innovation and patent protection in Gowling WLG’s Life Sciences team.

Chris works with clients from biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and materials, therapeutics, bioprocessing, and other areas of applied life sciences to secure broad intellectual property protection for their technologies and discoveries. He approaches patent drafting and prosecution with a depth of technical experience in molecular biology and biopharmaceutical development.

Additionally, Chris assists clients with the assessment of strategic opportunities within existing intellectual property portfolios, or the planning of patent strategies across multiple countries.

Prior to joining Gowling WLG, Chris worked at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Industry Liaison Office (UILO) in the evaluation of early-stage discoveries for their impact, patentability, and commercial potential. Prior to this role, he worked as a translational life scientist with renowned Canadian researcher and biotech entrepreneur Dr. Michael Hayden, with whom he earned his PhD in Medical Genetics at UBC. Across his research career, Chris led studies in the development of novel therapeutics, resulting in issued national patents in the United States, Europe, and Canada.
