Derek Goodban has been a partner in our energy practice (which he leads) for over 15 years. During this time he has advised exclusively on energy related matters with a particular focus on the electricity sector. Prior to becoming a partner he spent a period in-house at National Grid, the transmission company in Great Britain. He has been recognised in many of the major legal directories for his deep understanding of the sector.
The supply of secure, affordable energy, which minimises environmental impacts is a challenge being faced by governments, energy companies and other stakeholders globally. Throughout the world new legal and regulatory frameworks are being implemented, infrastructure is being developed and reinforced and companies are adapting to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges the sector offers.
Derek works with a wide range of private and public sector stakeholders, including energy companies, project developers, energy suppliers and traders, major corporates, new entrants and governments and regulatory bodies, helping them to take advantage of the huge opportunities provided by the sector in a way that is consistent with the ever-increasing and dynamic regulatory frameworks that underpin it.
A combination of his detailed understanding of the sector and his commercial nous means he can spot risks and opportunities and deliver innovative legal solutions to issues ranging from major project development structuring to new energy trading arrangements. He has been described as a "excellent communicator and commanding strategic thinker" and his pragmatic, commercially focused advice is aimed at helping his clients achieve their objectives, whatever their interest in the sector.
Derek has been recognised as among the world's leading energy lawyers in Who's Who Legal, 2016.
