Eslam (Essie) Mehina

Essie Mehina is a summer student in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. She is a first-year JD student in the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University.

Prior to entering law school, Essie obtained her master of science in neuroscience from the University of Calgary and her PhD in neuroscience from the University of Victoria. Her research involved using two-photon microscopy to study how brain cells, astrocytes and microglia, regulate and repair blood vessels in the brains of rodents under healthy and pathological conditions. Essie has received numerous awards for her academic and research achievements including the prestigious NSERC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Dedicated to promoting her peers’ positive experiences in their shared academic community, Essie is heavily involved in volunteer work. She is an advocate with the Dalhousie Student Advocacy Service and, during her PhD, she was elected as the chair of the Neuroscience Graduate Students’ Association for two terms. As a graduate student, she was also elected by her peers as their representative for both the University of Victoria Board of Governors and the Senate. Essie currently volunteers for the Dalhousie Law Journal as her class’s representative on the Dalhousie Law Hour Society, and as a scientist on the Animal Care Committee for Immunoprecise Antibodies (Canada) Ltd.

Keen to support innovators in science and technology, from academia and beyond, Essie has a strong interest in intellectual property law. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, foraging for wild mushrooms and woodworking.
