James S. Peacock, QC

Jim Peacock is a Calgary-based Gowling WLG advocacy partner who has been practising civil litigation before the Alberta courts, administative tribunals and arbitration panels for over 35 years. He has also appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Over the years, Jim's practice has focused on professional and product liability disputes, as well as on a wide range of corporate and commercial disputes. For over two decades, a significant part of his practice has focused on health law and medical defence, including acting as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association and its member physicians, and as head of the medical defence practice group in Calgary.

Jim takes a proactive approach to litigation and understands the importance clients place on timely, practical advice and the effective use of resources - values that he strives to instill in the lawyers with whom he works.

Jim was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2002 and is perennially recognized as a leading lawyer in the areas in which he practices by major legal directories such as The Best Lawyers in Canada and the Canadian Legal Expert Directory. In 2014 and 2015, Jim was recognized as Lawyer of the Year in his geographic region in the areas of product liability and medical defence, respectively, by Best Lawyers.

Professional and community involvement

Jim was a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta from 2001 to 2008 and, during that time, chaired all of its major committees. He was elected by his Bencher colleagues to serve as president of the Law Society during its 100th anniversary in 2007. Jim was appointed to the board of directors of the Alberta Law Reform Institute in 2006 and served as its chair from 2010 to 2015. He is currently a member of the advisory board of the University of Calgary's Public Interest Law Clinic.

Jim is a past member of the Provincial Council of the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and the board of directors of Calgary Legal Guidance, an organization with which he continues to volunteer.

Jim was appointed by the provincial government to the board of governors of the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2008 and he served as chair of the board from 2009 until the statutory completion of his term in 2014. Jim is also a past president of the board of directors of Theatre Calgary, past chairman of the board of directors of the Calgary Learning Centre and a past member of the board of directors of Calgary Habitat for Humanity.
