Karen O'Connell is a Director based in Gowling WLG's Commercial Litigation team in London. She advises a wide range of clients on all forms of commercial dispute resolution, risk management and dispute avoidance.
Karen has extensive international arbitration experience. She has acted for clients involved in proceedings governed by the major arbitral rules (including ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and LCIA) as well as those rules which are peculiar to certain industries or types of international trade (including LMAA and ICA). In this area, Karen has experience in a range of complex subject matters including alleged misuse of confidential information, investor-state disputes, and scope of licence and royalty payment provisions in relation to specific aspects of 3G mobile telephony.
Publishable highlights of Karen's career so far include acting for CPC Group Limited to secure a victory in the high profile CPC Group Limited v Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Co and advising OCCAR, the pan-European defence procurement agency, on a contractual dispute regarding the development and supply of 180 A400M.
Karen has a broad client base but she focuses in particular on the aerospace and defence, technology, manufacturing, utilities, and oil and gas sectors. Her six month secondment in the global legal group of an international oil and gas company was an invaluable insight into the challenges faced by clients operating across multiple jurisdictions.
Commercial disputes of any kind usually present a variety of challenges which go beyond the legal issues. Karen focuses on providing clients with clear, timely and pragmatic advice and assistance in order to help them to resolve their disputes in a cost-efficient way.
