Mark Bantey

Mark Bantey is a partner in Gowling WLG's Montréal office, practising in the fields of media law, privacy law, civil and commercial litigation, as well as administrative and constitutional law.

Mark's practice is particularly focused on media law and acting for both national and local press, Mark has extensive experience in pre-publication review, libel law, access to information law, freedom of the press issues such as publication bans and protection of journalistic sources, constitutional law, and human rights. Mark also has longstanding experience in the right to privacy, advising clients on their rights and obligations and defending claims for breach of privacy. As a litigator in media law and commercial law, he acts before courts of all jurisdictions, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mark practises law in both official languages.

Mark has lectured in media law at Concordia University at the bachelor and master's levels. Frequently called upon to give seminars on both the theoretical aspects of media law and practical difficulties facing journalists, he participates regularly in media law seminars given by the American Bar Association, the Newspaper Association of America, the Media Law Resource Center, and Ad IDEM – the Canadian Association of Media lawyers.
