Michael Schwartz is an intellectual property litigator with experience in patent, trademark and copyright disputes. Based in Gowling WLG’s Toronto office, Michael is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group.
Michael has acted for some of the world’s largest innovative pharmaceutical companies in complex, cross-border disputes, including patent proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations and trademark proceedings related to drug names. His litigation experience spans various industries, including pharmaceuticals (such as biologics), medical devices, agriculture, trucking, consumer products (including food, wood-splitting devices, nutritional supplements, and cleaning chemicals) and online streaming services.
He has successfully represented clients before the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal. In addition to securing trial victories, Michael has resolved contentious disputes through successful mediations.
Called to the Ontario Bar in 2017, Michael earned his JD from Western University in 2016, completing a concentration in Intellectual Property, Information and Technology.
Prior to studying law, Michael obtained his MSc in Cell and Systems Biology and his BSc in Genetics. His master’s thesis investigated changes in the transcriptional networks underlying pluripotency in mouse embryonic stem cells upon the induction of differentiation.
Before joining Gowling WLG, Michael practised at two well-known intellectual property boutique firms in Toronto.
