Richard Meers

Richard gained valuable experience acting on behalf of claimants in professional negligence and financial services disputes prior to joining Gowling WLG. In particular, Richard dealt with cases concerning mis-sold pension products and investments and claims against pension providers and administrators.

He was involved in a multi-million pound group litigated action against a pension provider and administrator for lack of due diligence in accepting pension transfers and making high risk investments with individuals' pension monies where those individuals had been advised by an entity not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority to provide pension and investment advice.

Richard now acts for pension scheme trustees, sponsoring employers and representative beneficiaries in disputes relating to the benefits payable under the rules of occupational pension schemes. This includes disputes as to the construction of the relevant rules of pension schemes where the wording is construed by the Court and rectification claims where a party is asking the Court to alter the wording of the relevant rules on the basis that they do not reflect what the parties intended. He is, and has been, involved in both heavily contested rectification proceedings and more straightforward rectification by summary judgment where the parties are generally more in agreement about whether there has been a mistake with the drafting of the relevant rules.

Richard also acts in professional negligence disputes arising from services provided to scheme trustees and sponsoring employers in respect of their schemes.

He is an integral part of our client service teams providing advice to clients on issues that may give rise to disputes. He also assists with responses to member complaints under schemes' internal disputes resolution procedure or at the Pensions Ombudsman if the complaint has been escalated to that stage. Richard seeks to provide straightforward advice on member complaints and ensure that they are handled sensibly and proportionally.
