Robert Currall

Robert Currall has broad experience in advising on projects in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. He has advised a wide range of clients in the private and public sector on projects, including project sponsors, commercial banks, development finance institutions, state utilities, oil majors, government ministries and local authorities. His sector experience spans energy (both thermal power and renewables), waste, district energy and logistics. He has particular experience of work in emerging markets, in particular in Africa.

Experience

  • Advising a Ghanaian project developer in respect of its successfully closed 192 MW oil and gas fired power project at Aboadze, Ghana. This development was project-financed by both commercial lenders and development finance institutions, and was awarded the African Power Deal of the Year Award by Project Finance International. This also involved the creation of "user manuals" for clients to turn complicated contracts into user-friendly daily guides.
  • Sheffield Waste PFI - advised Sheffield City Council in respect of its 35-year integrated waste management contractual arrangements with Veolia. The project was driven by the need to achieve substantial efficiency savings for the public sector and to simplify contractual arrangements which had become complex and difficult for the parties to manage, and involved re-negotiating complicated performance and payment mechanisms.
  • Advised a state utility in Southern Africa in respect of the operation and management of its 160 MW coal-fired power station, which is vital to electricity generation. This involved extricating the state utility from its previous contract (because its relationship with its contractor had broken down) and re-negotiating arrangements with the replacement operator.
  • Cenpower, Ghana - advised the developers of the first project-financed power project in Ghana to achieve financial close. Robert was also involved in the operational phases of the Project in helping the Sponsors deal with a number of claims from the EPC Contractor for time and delay, which if successful would have had a negative impact on the Project in the long-term.
  • Advised a group of six development finance institutions in respect of the restructuring of an innovative bioethanol cultivation and renewable power project in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Robert was also involved in the initial financing, which was the first post-conflict project in post-conflict Sierra Leone.
  • Diesel power project, Freetown, Sierra Leone - Robert advised the sponsors in respect of construction and operational contracts for a 57 MW heavy fuel oil project in Freetown. This involved assisting clients with review of a large number of tenders and negotiating contracts with the eventual winners of the tender process to provide the client with the best commercial and legal package which would also gain lender approval.
  • Waste Project, UK - advised a local authority in respect of the switch of its collection arrangements to an innovative energy from waste plant in Cheshire. This involved complex commercial negotiations with the private sector and ensuring the public sector was not exposed to undue risk as a result of the variation.
  • Advising a German state bank in respect of its financing of four onshore wind farms in England and Scotland, with a total transaction value of over £100 million.
  • Advising a project sponsor in respect of its innovative bioliquids power project in Beckton, East London, using "fatbergs" from London's drains as a primary source of fuel. This was the first project of its type to achieve financial close in the UK.
  • Advising clients in respect of desalination projects in Abu Dhabi and Kenya.
