Rory Jones

Rory is a senior associate in the EU, Trade and Competition team who has worked closely with clients from the industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical and tech sectors. Rory has experience across the breadth of the team's practice areas, including merger control, cartel investigations (both civil and criminal) and international trade law. He is also a member of the firm's UK dawn raid response team.

Rory speaks fluent Spanish, having grown up in Madrid, and is a member of the firm's Latin America desk. He also speaks French to an advanced level.

Rory graduated from Nottingham University in 2010 with a first class Masters in law. In 2016 Rory successfully completed a postgraduate diploma in competition law at King's College London, obtaining a distinction and coming second in his year.

Rory writes regularly on EU and UK competition law and international trade law.  He has contributed to publications including:

  • Merger Control - Jurisdictional Comparisons (3rd edition), published by Sweet & Maxwell; and
  • Merger Control 2018, published by Chambers & Partners.

Experience

Rory's recent experience includes:

Anti-competitive practices: compliance and investigations

  • Representing a manufacturer of construction inputs in relation to a civil investigation by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (the CMA) into suspected anti-competitive arrangements, with this investigation running in parallel to a criminal investigation conducted by that authority.
  • Representing a manufacturer in the life sciences sector in relation to a CMA investigation into a suspected abuse of dominance.
  • Regularly advising a UK trade association on competition law compliance and attending board meetings and workshops.
  • Representing an energy supplier in relation to an Ofgem investigation into alleged breaches of the Chapter I prohibition of the Competition Act 1998.

Merger control

  • Acting for ProStrakan Group plc in securing Phase I clearance in the UK and Germany in relation to its £230 million acquisition of Archimedes Pharma.
  • Advising Origin Enterprises plc on numerous acquisitions of competitors active in the agrochemical sector, including securing several clearances in the UK.
  • Advising a global provider of Business Support Systems (BSS) on its proposed acquisition of a UK competitor.

International trade law

  • Representing the complainant in a European Commission anti-dumping investigation into alleged dumped Chinese imports.
  • Advising a mining group on the potential application of the EU and US sanctions regimes in respect of Zimbabwe to the proposed disposal of a Zimbabwean asset.
  • Advising a multi-national conglomerate on the potential application of the EU sanctions regime to proposed new business ventures in Iran.

Litigation

  • Advising Thai Airways in defending contribution claims for damages brought before the High Court, arising from the European Commission's cartel infringement decision concerning air cargo.
