Ruth Ormston

Ruth Ormston helps clients to manage both their pensions and their employment solutions.

Working within the Combined HR Solutions team, we have a unique insight into both pensions and employment law, and are able to consider the full 'spectrum' of an employee's benefit package when we offer advice to clients.

Ruth has a particular interest in age discrimination. She writes regular monthly articles on hot topics in age discrimination and carries out training for clients on how to mitigate the risk of age discrimination claims within their business.

Highlights

Some of Ruth's highlights include:

  • Successfully completing the rules of the new Isle of Man Unified Pension Scheme, having worked to tight and challenging timescales with the Isle of Man team.
  • Finalising and completing the legal review of the website for a national pension provider for 'soft-launch', and I.T testing.

Clients

Advising trustee and corporate clients on a range of pension and employment issues. Clients include Amey, the Pension Protection Fund and the Isle of Man Government.

Ruth coordinates a group of lawyers within the employment team that offer pro bono legal advice to Working Families, a charity that offers employment and benefits assistance to individuals from low-income backgrounds in the UK. Ruth was awarded a London Legal Support Trust award after being nominated by Working Families for her work with them.

Experience

Conducting age discrimination audits of pension schemes and of employee benefits in general.

Working with the communication and legal teams of one of the nation's largest workplace pension reform providers to sign off communication materials, including the employer and member facing website.

Advising a U.S. corporate on human resources law in the UK and reviewing U.S. documentation to cross-check for compatibility.

Working with one of the first large employers to have employer duties under workplace pension reform, including ensuring employee communications were clear, legally compliant and sent within the right timescales.

Drafting the rules for a consolidated and single unified public sector pension scheme in another jurisdiction.

Working with a public sector client to implement pension changes following a TUPE transfer.

Advising trustee clients on managing conflicts of interest in the light of a large scale corporate transaction.

Assisting a client with the communication and consultation aspects of a workplace redundancy.
