Stephen Longfellow

Stephen Longfellow is a London based director. He advises trustees and employers on all aspects of pensions law, helping them to navigate the complex and ever changing pensions landscape. Stephen's clients benefit from his broad experience and thorough understanding of technical legal issues which he converts into clear, practical advice.

Stephen has particular expertise helping clients to manage the liabilities associated with their defined benefit occupational pension plans. He has a particular focus on risk transfer - an area where he has been at the forefront of developments.

For example, Stephen was part of the team that advised the trustee of a multi-billion pound pension plan in relation to the biggest single buy-out transaction in the UK. He also acts for one of the leading insurers of defined benefit pension plans, Rothesay Life, providing advice in relation to everything from complex "all-risks" buy-outs through to the more straightforward buy-in transactions.

Stephen also has considerable experience advising in relation the Pensions Regulator's moral hazard powers, having advised a UK listed company (and its group) in relation to a Pensions Regulator investigation into its three defined benefit schemes. He has also advised recipients of section 72 notices issued by the Pensions Regulator in relation to their obligations under such notices and corporates in relation to the risks associated with the Pensions Regulator's powers in the context of corporate restructurings and acquisitions.
