Steven Stechly

Steven Stechly (they/them) is an articling student in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office.

Steve completed their Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa with a specialization in "Aboriginal Law and Indigenous Legal Traditions." During their studies, Steve was an active member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and contributed as Co-President of the OUTLaw- 2SLGBTQ+ Student Association. They were also a co-organizer of the inaugural National OUTLaw Conference in Canada. Additionally, Steve's work on citation politics and Indigenous Legal Knowledge has been published in the Ottawa Law Review.

Prior to entering law school, Steve obtained their BASc at McGill University with a double major in political science and neuropsychology. While completing their undergraduate degree, Steve worked in Northern communities as a public health student at the Cree Board of Health and Social Services in Waskaganish, Eeyou Istchee, and as an outreach coordinator and science workshop leader in Nunavut. Steve gained valuable legal experience through their work with the Law Society of Nunavut, where they drafted public legal education materials relating to employment law in the territory. Steve previously summered in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, working with various practice groups in the Advocacy Department.
